Chlorine Dioxide Dosing is now part of Comfort Services Group Limited Water Treatment Services.

Comfort Services Group Limited are proud to announce that we are now covered by Legionella Control Association (LCA) for Plant & Equipment as part of our services provided in the water treatment industry.

Comfort Services Group Limited can provide you with the full package including equipment and installation, chemical supply, service breakdown along with a full monitoring regime with monthly serving and plant monitoring visits. The units are installed and maintained by our team of specially trained engineers, site service specialists and technical experts.

The installation and fittings are all WRAS approved: Since 2008, the Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS) has been committed to safeguarding public health through the prevention of public water supply contamination, as well as ensuring efficient water usage.  Any water fitting that comes into contact with public mains water supply must comply with the 'Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations' which can be illustrated through WRAS approval. For more information on WRAS and WRAS approvals follow https://www.wras.co.uk.

Introduction

Introduction

Chlorine Dioxide Dosing Systems use established technology in order to deliver a controlled amount of chlorine dioxide disinfectant to the water system to be treated. This powerful water disinfectant is effective at killing waterborne pathogens, Legionella, virus and bacteria including Giardia, Oocysts and Cryptosporidium.

Chlorine dioxide is an oxide of chlorine with two oxygen atoms (ClO2) with a completely different behaviour compared to hypochlorite or chlorine gas. It does not react with water, but dissolves physically. Chlorine dioxide kills microorganisms in the water by way of irreversible oxidative destruction of the transport proteins in the living cells.

Because of its high redox potential, chlorine dioxide has a much more powerful disinfecting action against all kinds of germs and contaminants such as viruses, bacteria, fungi and algae, than other biocides. The oxidation potential is higher than with e.g. chlorine, which means that significantly fewer chemicals are required. Microorganisms that are resistant to chlorine, for example Legionella, can be killed completely by chlorine dioxide.

Comfort Services Group supply and install bespoke dosing control units to aid application along with usual disinfection measures that help the control of Legionella and other bacteria. The use of chlorine dioxide is permitted in accordance with the HSE Guide L8 and leaves no aftertaste in the water which is an added benefit with this product.

Use and application

Use and application

Chlorine dioxide (ClO2)

Chlorine Dioxide is a powerful antioxidant commonly used as a disinfectant in water. This agent disinfects regardless of pH and normal ambient temperatures. It has a very good sustained-release effect and remains active in the pipes for many hours and days. Chlorine dioxide can be used to treat entire water systems to combat Legionella and Chlorine dioxide is proven to reliably break down biofilms in pipework, cold water storage tanks, hot water storage cylinders / calorifers and domestic services distribution systems.

Chlorine dioxide is produced at the point of application by mixing stabilised chlorine donor liquid and an acid activator.

The use of chlorine dioxide in the treatment of water for building services has grown significantly in recent years. This is a result of several factors, e.g. increased awareness of biological related health issues, the need to conserve energy and the increasing quality and simplicity of use of chlorine dioxide systems. In use chlorine dioxide is termed a ‘dispersive’ treatment, this means that the chlorine dioxide is dosed into the water system and travels around the entire circuit providing a ‘residual’ level of treatment. This is very important as it means that the applied chlorine dioxide can continue to kill bacteria in all areas of the system that it reaches and not just at the point of use and this helps to explain why chlorine dioxide is so effective.

Advantages

Advantages

There are more benefits to the use of Chlorine Dioxide and its treatment technology. In addition to the control of Legionella, it kills a wide range of other bacteria, E.Coli, Coliforms, Pseudomonas, Cryptosporidium, Giardia Cysts, Algae and Amoebae. It is approved for use in drinking water by the Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) (<0.5ppm Total Oxidant) and is very simple to test for and monitor.

Chlorine dioxide has been shown to be more effective than chlorine in the control of Legionella bacteria and pseudomonas species. Due to the way it works, chlorine dioxide will never lose its efficiency, which makes it an ideal residual biocide. Chlorine dioxide is also far less corrosive than chlorine, meaning that systems last longer and risks of internal system degradation are significantly reduced.

Environmental Safety

Environmental Safety

Environmental safety is a key advantage of chlorine dioxide when comparing with alternative biocides. Unlike chlorine, ClO2 will react to form mainly inorganic disinfection by products, the predominant species being chlorite. Chlorite will subsequently reduce to form harmless chloride. Modern generation systems are able to monitor and adjust the dose rate to ensure that environmental limits are not breached.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is chlorine dioxide dosing?

Chlorine dioxide dosing is a process used to treat water. This process is used to kill bacteria throughout systems which use water. Dosing ensures that chlorine dioxide is able to kill this bacteria in all areas of the system which it reaches rather than simply at the point of use. This has helped it become one of the most popular methods for removing bacteria from water over recent years. There is now more awareness of biological health related issues than there was in the past, and this has raised awareness of the need for water treatment services like chlorine dioxide dosing.

How to know if you need chlorine dioxide dosing?

If you manage any kind of water-based system and have concerns about bacteria, it's likely that you will require chlorine dioxide dosing services. Chlorine dioxide is particularly effective at controlling legionella alongside other forms of bacteria such as E.Coli, Coliforms, Pseudomonas, Cryptosporidium, Giardia Cysts, Algae and Amoebae. Research suggests chlorine dioxide dosing may be substantially more effective than chlorine when it comes to controlling legionella bacteria.

It has become a particularly popular water treatment due to the way it never loses efficiency. It is also less corrosive than chlorine and therefore safer for your system.
