Glycol is a chemical often used in cooling systems as an antifreeze, as it adjusts the temperature range of a system. During winter seasons especially, it’s important to protect your water systems, by regularly checking and servicing them, as well as working with a professional to understand if they need to be treated with glycol in order to lower the system freezing point.
The percent of glycol added, determines what the new freezing point will be. A lower freezing point means process fluid can be kept at colder temperatures. Glycol doesn’t dissipate as quickly as organic compounds like inhibitors, but it’s crucial that you have the correct levels and keep it topped up. With the appropriate dose, you can avoid frozen pipes, split valves, and an underperforming system during winter and any down-time.
